Katha kahe so Kathak:
Kathak is one of the major classical dance forms of India, known for its intricate footwork, expressive gestures, and storytelling through dance. It originated in North India and has a rich history that dates back to ancient times.
Kathak’s roots can be traced back to the Sanskrit word “Katha,” which means “story.” This dance form originally developed as a means of storytelling in the temples of North India, where it was used to convey mythological tales and religious stories. There are three prominent styles of Kathak: Jaipur Gharana, Lucknow Gharana, and Benares Gharana. Each gharana (school) has its unique characteristics, repertoire, and emphasis on particular aspects of the dance form. Kathak combines elements of both dance and drama. Dancers use expressive facial expressions (bhava) and hand gestures (mudras) to convey emotions and stories. Intricate footwork (tatkar) is a hallmark of Kathak, with dancers using their feet to create rhythmic patterns and intricate beats. Kathak dancers traditionally wear colorful, flowing costumes with ornate jewelry and ankle bells (ghungroo). The ghungroos produce rhythmic sounds that add to the musicality of the performance. Kathak is performed to classical Indian music, often accompanied by instruments like the tabla (drums), sitar (stringed instrument), sarangi (bowed instrument), and harmonium (keyboard). The music plays a crucial role in setting the rhythm and mood for the dance. The repertoire of Kathak includes a variety of compositions, including thumris (semi-classical songs), bhajans (devotional songs), and taranas (fast-paced compositions with rhythmic syllables). Dancers also perform intricate dance sequences, called “tukras” and “chakkars,” which involve quick spins and turns.
Kathak is traditionally passed down through the guru-shishya (teacher-student) tradition. Students receive rigorous training under the guidance of a skilled guru (teacher). The training includes both practical and theoretical aspects of the dance, including learning the history, theory, and practice of Kathak.
Dr. Kavita Thakur has done her PHD in Kathak and has trained inumerous students till date including many from the economicalically weaker section of the society. She follows the Lucknow gharana style of Kathak dance.
